Sip happens! – Issue No. 6
This month, the Mediterranean took centre stage: one bottle from the wild mountains of Calabria, the other from the wind‑swept elegance of Sardinia.
So—did southern power or island aristocracy win the night? Let’s dive in.
We’re thrilled to welcome Salvatore Speranza as our guest for this month’s blind tasting—a great friend and a talented sommelier whose palate always keeps us on our toes.
For anyone curious about the full tasting vibe (especially our Swiss German crew), the recorded session is up on YouTube. Auto‑translate actually does a pretty decent job—perfect for an extra dose of entertainment!
Librandi Gravello 2022 Tenuta Arcidiaconato, Calabria IGT
Calabria isn’t usually the first place people look when discussing Italy’s top wines—but Gravello has been challenging that narrative for decades. Produced by Librandi, the region’s modern flagship estate, Gravello blends the rustic soul of the south with polished, international finesse.
The 2022 vintage comes from the Tenuta Arcidiaconato, a rocky, sun-drenched estate sitting inland where warm days and fresh coastal winds help the grapes retain energy and lift. As always, Gravello is a fusion of native Gaglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon—a combination that gives both identity and structure.
In the glass:
Expect bright cherry, graphite, and Mediterranean herbs, followed by darker tones of plum skin and cedar. The palate is vibrant and youthful, with firm yet ripe tannins and a savoury, slightly smoky finish that feels unmistakably southern Italian. A wine with both charm and backbone.

Marchese di Villamarina 2012 – Sella & Mosca, Sardinia
From one of Italy’s most iconic island estates comes a wine of true pedigree. Sella & Mosca has long been a benchmark not only in Sardinia but across Italy, and Marchese di Villamarina sits confidently at the top of their range—a pure Cabernet Sauvignon shaped by the island’s unmistakable terroir.
The 2012 vintage is a perfect example of how gracefully Sardinian Cabernet can evolve. The warm, dry climate and steady sea breezes create deeply concentrated fruit, yet the wine remains beautifully balanced thanks to Sella & Mosca’s measured, traditional winemaking.
In the glass:
A mature, layered Cabernet displaying cassis, dried bay leaf, black olive, tobacco, and subtle notes of warm terracotta. The texture is refined and silky, the tannins softened with age, and the finish long and elegant. It’s a wine that whispers rather than shouts—aristocratic, composed, and quietly confident.
And if you watched the YouTube tasting, you’ll have seen just how much emotion and nostalgia surfaced after that very first sip—proof that some wines don’t just taste great, they trigger memories worth revisiting.
